The Hand of Grace in the Snowstorm: My Gratitude Story

Last Wednesday was a day that reminded me of God's unfailing grace and protection. It began as a simple act of love—a chance to help my son Frederick during his school’s bake sale. I had volunteered to fry a beloved Ghanaian snack, boflot (puff loaves), a treat I was excited to share with his school community.

I woke up early, kneading the dough and carefully waiting for it to rise before frying each piece to perfection. The joy of knowing my son appreciated my efforts gave me motivation, even in the biting cold. Once everything was ready, I packed the snacks and set off for his school.

The weather that morning was challenging, thick fog, snow, and gusty winds. Driving cautiously, I arrived safely. Seeing Frederick waiting for me with a smile in front of the school library warmed my heart. I handed over the snacks, exchanged hugs, and started my journey back home.

The return trip, however, was harrowing. The snowstorm continued fiercely, reducing visibility. As I drove in the middle lane, suddenly, a car in the far-right lane decided to overtake recklessly, speeding through the slush-covered road. A spray of muddy snow splashed across my windscreen, completely obstructing my view.

Panic rose within me. For a few terrifying seconds, I couldn’t see the road. My car veered into the left lane, and in that moment of chaos, I could only shout, “Jesus!”

Instantly, it was as if the hand of God cleared my visibility. My wipers worked just in time, and I regained control of the car, steering it back into my lane. My heart raced, but I felt an overwhelming peace wash over me. I knew without a doubt that God had intervened.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). That scripture echoed in my mind as I continued my drive. It was a stark reminder that God’s saving grace is always near, even in the most unexpected moments.

Much like Peter walking on water in the storm, when he cried out, “Lord, save me!” and immediately Jesus reached out His hand (Matthew 14:30–31), I experienced His presence in my distress. Just as He saved Peter from sinking, He saved me from what could have been a disaster.

The snowstorm that day was not just a weather condition; it was a metaphor for life’s challenges. In our moments of helplessness, when the road seems unclear and danger looms, God shows up. “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me” (Psalm 50:15).

As I parked my car safely at home, I whispered a prayer of gratitude. The puff loaves may have been my offering to Frederick’s school, but God reminded me that His offering to me, and to all of us,
is His ever-present grace.

This experience reaffirmed my faith: in every storm, literal or figurative, God is with us. His saving hand is near, just in time. “The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life” (Psalm 121:7).
